DCW (Direct Care Worker) Training in Arizona: What Family Caregivers Need to Know

In the past, the training required to become a caregiver in Arizona varied from agency to agency. To ensure a high standard of care across the board, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) implemented standardized Direct Care Worker (DCW) Training.

If you are transitioning into a paid family caregiver role, you must complete the state's DCW modules within your first 90 days of employment.

What Does DCW Training Cover?

DCW training is broken down into specific modules that teach the foundational skills of professional caregiving. The two primary modules required for DDD care are:

  • Level 1: Fundamentals: This covers the basics of the caregiving profession, including infection control, communication skills, HIPAA privacy rules, and navigating the state's healthcare system.

  • Level 2: Developmental Disabilities: This module dives deeply into understanding specific developmental diagnoses, supporting positive behaviors, and teaching independent life skills.

How is the Training Completed?

The training typically involves a mix of instructional learning and a hands-on skills test.

  • The Knowledge Portion: You will learn the material and must pass a written or digital exam for both modules.

  • The Skills Demonstration: You must physically demonstrate to a qualified instructor that you know how to safely perform care tasks, such as proper handwashing, transferring an individual from a bed to a chair, and assisting with hygiene.

Can Parents and Spouses Skip This?

Currently, Arizona allows certain exceptions for legally responsible relatives (like parents of minor children and spouses) providing Attendant Care, allowing them to bypass portions of the DCW training if they meet specific criteria. However, rules change frequently, and Habilitation providers usually face different standards.

The best way to ensure you are compliant is to work with an agency that actively manages your training record. The clinical team at Nova Z Health Services audits the specific service codes you will be providing and assigns only the exact DCW modules the state requires for your role. We handle the tracking so you can stay focused on your family.
